Progressive Series: Core Focus Part 1

  • Yoga Arts 3017 Cañon Street San Diego, CA, 92106 United States (map)

This Progressive Series is all about opening your mind in different way to approach your physical yoga practice. March will be Core Focus, April is all about Back Strength, and May will highlight Hip Power. Each of these regions plays an important role on how well our bodies move. When all three areas have a balance of strength and flexibility, they can work together creating more efficiency and resilience.

Our bodies help to enhance and enrich each moment to its fullest. It is our vehicle for awakening and is the physical platform for everything you accomplish in life. A regular yoga practice not only provides more flexibility, strength, and balance, but also enhances our mental clarity and sense of ease. A bigger component of these benefits comes from how your practice affects your nervous system. If the nervous system stays in constant stress mode, it’s hard for your muscles to relax and to hear the subtle cues of wisdom from your body.

Part 1 and 2 will be focused on core awareness and the nervous system. Your core is an entire support system for your body. Whether you are getting out of bed, mopping the floor or hitting a tennis ball, the necessary motions either originate in your core or move through it. They completely surround and support your spine and pelvis, while connecting your upper and lower body, effectively transferring forces from one to the other. Weak or inflexible core muscles can impair how well your limbs move and affect your balance creating less stability in your movements. While it's important to build a strong core, it is equally important to build your back and hip muscles because they too provide substantial support. When all three areas are equally balanced in strength and flexibilty, they work together and create a more efficient stable foundation for movement.

Concepts that will be explored:
Functional Movement vs Yoga Postures = Constructive Work
Alignment Accessibility vs Image of Pose = Not moving past Range of Motion
Functional Movement Patterns vs Dysfunctional = Efficient Action
Productive Sensation vs Counter Productive = Receptive Engagement
Repetitive Intensity = Limited time that one's body can engage in those activities (e.g. dancers+gymnast)
Individual bodies need different alignment = Exploration of options and modifications
Mindfulness, Equanimity & Acceptance for what is (Sutra's) = Skillful work within the present moment
Learn how to wisely build strength and flexibility in a balanced way = Health & Well Being
